Retaining walls can be made of many different materials such as clay brick, concrete pavers, railway ties, concrete, and concrete wall blocks. Retaining walls have been used for thousands of years.  Many areas in the northeast are not very level and require retaining walls to level areas on a sloped surface.  Retaining walls have numerous qualities and can be used for different purposes.  They can be used as a seating wall or they can have a light post adjacent to them in order to illuminate the areas people walk.  The walls can have steps incorporated within them ultimately leading to a walkway or patio. Concrete is a building material that contains a mixture of small stones, sand, and cement. Water is added to those materials and when it’s mixed with the cement it forms a solid mass.  The hardening process of the concrete when mixed with water is called hydration.  Once the components are bonded together they become a solid material.  Concrete is mainly used for foundations, pavement, large buildings, bridges, walls and parking garages.  At Stone Tech Designs we primarily use concrete for driveways, sidewalks, patios, foundations, and as a baselayer for interlocking or clay paver patios.  A concrete driveway is very durable and can give off a nice look.  Concrete can be cheaper than most other paving products and it is used more than any other man-made product in the world.

Asphalt, in masonry contruction, is mainly used to pave roadways or driveways.  Since Stone Tech Designs primarily performs construction on residential housing areas we predominalty use asphalt to pave driveways.  Asphalt tends to be slightly cheaper than other paving materials. The benefits of using concrete pavers compared to using other paving materials are numerous. Concrete pavers remain unaltered in excessive heat or extreme cold. Concrete pavers are exceptionally solid which gives the pavers amazing strength and durabilty.

Each paving stone has a spacer which creates a joint that allows expansion without cracking. A segmental paving system allows for expansion and contraction without generating surface cracks. Concrete pavers have a life expectancy of over 50 years and are stronger than basic poured concrete surfaces. Concrete pavers are low-maintenance and also simple to repair if needed.

Maintenance of Concrete Pavers

Any stained or cracked paver can be replaced by removing the damaged one and installing a new one. An occasional rinsing and sweeping is about the only maintenance needed for the pavers. For areas of heavy moss or soiled spots, pressure washing is the most appropriate way to clean those areas. Also a cleaning solution, such as Sure Klean, with a brush and some water will help solve the problem.

Cultured stone is becoming more popular everyday for both the exterior and interior decorating of homes. The stone is man-made which makes it easy to shape while creating the look of a real stone. Cultured stone is made up of cement, natural aggregates and iron-oxide pigments. The base color is blended throughout and permanent mineral oxide pigments are applied and absorbed by the stone when it is cast. In this case there won’t be any change in color due to weathering.

The Advantages Over Other Stone Products

The stone is available in more than 20 different textures and more than 100 colors making it easy to match anything in your home or yard. One advantage of the Cultured stone is that it is lightweight whereas real stones can be very heavy. This is an advantage because it means less weight is being placed on your foundation. When installing a brick veneer a brick ledge is needed however with Cultured stone it is not because the stones are not thick. On the back side they are flat and can be applied to most surfaces to bond extremely well. Cultured stone is usually more affordable than most real stone products therefore giving it a competitive edge. The installation process is usually easier than most real stones but an experienced mason is needed to make sure that the product does not look artificial.
